Half term is the perfect opportunity for children to slow down, explore, and reconnect with nature — even here in the heart of London. At Dallington, we believe that learning doesn’t stop when the classroom door closes — it simply moves outdoors! Here are a few simple, enriching activities your family can enjoy this half term to nurture curiosity, creativity, and a love for the natural world.
1. Go on a Mini Nature Safari
You don’t have to leave the city to find wildlife — London’s parks, squares, and even pavements are full of surprises. Bring a magnifying glass and a notebook, and head to places like Hampstead Heath, Regents Park, or your local green space. Look closely for beetles under logs, birds in the trees, or plants sprouting between paving stones. Encourage children to draw or describe what they discover — it’s a brilliant way to build observation skills.
2. Build a Bug Hotel
Gather natural materials like twigs, leaves, pinecones, and cardboard tubes to create a cosy home for insects on your balcony, in a courtyard, or at the base of a tree. This hands-on project encourages problem-solving and care for the environment — and gives city wildlife a safe space to rest.
3. Create Natural Art
Collect fallen leaves, stones, and petals to make a temporary artwork on the ground — just like artist Andy Goldsworthy. Whether you’re in a local park or your back garden, it’s a mindful, creative activity that celebrates the beauty of nature in the city.
4. Cook Outdoors (Safely!)
If you have access to a safe outdoor space or a park with designated picnic areas, try making simple campfire-style snacks — like toasted marshmallows or fruit skewers on a portable stove. Cooking outdoors gives children a sense of independence and excitement. Always supervise closely, and talk about fire safety as part of the experience.
5. Night Sky Exploration
Even with London’s bright skyline, you can still enjoy a little stargazing! Head to a local park after dark or look up from your window to spot the Moon and brighter constellations. Apps like Sky Guide or Star Walk can help identify stars and planets — a perfect slow, screen-free way to end a day outdoors.
Half term adventures in London don’t have to be far away or expensive — just a bit of curiosity and a willingness to get a little muddy. Whether it’s bug-hunting in Hampstead Heath or building dens in Regent’s Park, the best learning often happens under the open sky.
See you back in Forest School — and don’t forget your wellies!
