At Dallington School, we believe that learning goes far beyond the classroom. Our Forest School programme is an integral part of how we help children Love, Grow, and Succeed—offering regular opportunities to connect with nature, take risks, and develop valuable life skills in an outdoor setting.

What Is Forest School?

Forest School is a learner-centred approach to education that takes place in natural environments. Rooted in play, exploration, and supported risk-taking, it encourages children to build resilience, confidence, independence, and a deep respect for the natural world.

Led by our qualified Forest School teacher, Shane, sessions at Dallington are carefully designed to support children’s holistic development—nurturing not just knowledge, but also teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and emotional well-being.

How Forest School Works at Dallington

Our Forest School programme is a weekly part of the curriculum for:

  • Nursery children (throughout the year), who visit a nearby park within walking distance of the school

  • Years 1 & 2, Years 3 & 4, and Years 5 & 6, who take part in weekly sessions for one term each academic year

    • Years 3–6 explore Caledonian Park in Camden, a vibrant green space close to our school

Each session includes a mix of structured activities and open-ended exploration. Children might be building dens and shelters, lighting small fires under supervision, identifying plants and wildlife, or playing collaborative games like Tribes, which promote leadership and teamwork.

The Lasting Benefits of Forest School

Forest School enriches the Dallington Difference by supporting our values of Relationships, Empathy, Creativity, Individuality, Play, and Enjoying the Journey (RECIPE). Here’s how:

1. Boosts Confidence and Independence

Children learn to take appropriate risks, make decisions, and solve problems independently. Lighting a fire safely or building a weatherproof shelter gives a real sense of achievement.

2. Fosters Teamwork and Social Skills

Group games and tasks like Tribes require communication, cooperation, and empathy—key life skills that build stronger relationships among peers.

3. Supports Mental Health and Wellbeing

Time in nature has been proven to reduce stress and increase emotional resilience. Our students return from Forest School sessions more focused, calm, and positive.

4. Deepens Connection with the Natural World

Learning to identify local flora and fauna helps children develop a sense of environmental stewardship—a key part of becoming responsible global citizens.

5. Encourages Curiosity and Creative Thinking

Open-ended play and natural materials inspire imagination and problem-solving in ways that traditional classroom environments can’t always replicate.

Why It Matters

In a world that’s increasingly digital and fast-paced, Forest School provides a meaningful balance. It reminds children that learning can be muddy, magical, and full of wonder—and that every stick, leaf, and trail can be the beginning of a new discovery.

At Dallington, Forest School is more than just outdoor education—it’s a celebration of curiosity, courage, and care. Whether it’s spotting a ladybird or learning to spark a fire, each experience brings our children closer to nature and to themselves.
